Born to Sri Umashankar Rajanahally and Smt Suneetha Umashankar from Davanagere in North Karnataka,Kalpana started learning Hindustani vocal at the tender age of five years under Pandit Maruthi Rao Inamdar, a maestro from the Gwalior Gharana. Even as a toddler, she could recognize the intricacies of sur and taal. Her father recognized her potential and put her to rigorous music training at a tender age to ensure a strong foundation in the Khayal music. She sang for Swami Chinmayanandaji at the age of ten years at Bangalore, during March 1992. Swamiji recognized her potential and blessed her. Kalpana received further training from eminent vocalists of the country, Smt Veena Sahasrabuddhe of the Gwalior Gharana and Smt Aditi Upadhya of the Agra Gharana.
Pt. Maruthi Rao Inamdar was a doyen of Hindustani music in North Karnataka. He was known for his famous compositions in Kannada. Trained both in Carnatic and Hindustani music by renowned gurus, Panditji had a strong sense of precision in sur and taal. His insistence on the accuracy of swar and lay laid a strong foundation in Kalpana’s formative years.
Smt. Veena Sahasrabuddhe was a world renowned Hindustani vocalist of the Gwalior gharana. Widely acclaimed as a performer of the khayal style of Indian classical singing and of evocative devotional songs, she had over 40 published albums to her credit. Veenaji honed Kalpana’s technique further to propel her to greater heights as a singer.
Smt Aditi Upadhya has received intense training in the traditional paramparic style, characterized by the dedicated and close tutelage of her Guru and father, Pt. Dinkar Kaikini, himself a grand and renowned gavaiyya of the Agra Gharana, and her mother, Shashikala Kaikini, respected radio vocalist. Aditiji frequently gives lecture demonstrations and workshops on Indian classical music to both novices and connoisseurs. She is also a devoted Guru to a select group of students and has also taught Hindustani music at the Mallya Aditi International School in Bangalore.
For her achievements and talent, Kalpana has been honored and felicitated at various fora and has won the state award from the Govt of Karnataka in 1999 and national-level award at the National youth festival held at Gandhinagar, Gujarat in 2000.
Kalpana has performed at several prestigious platforms all over the world and has also released music albums such as Bhajore Bhaiyya a compilation on semi-classical bhajans for Chinmaya Mission.
